The View From Here

15/2/01 - A fascinating article on the academic arguments surrounding the discovery of a bone from a new human ancestor, Millennium Ancestor:
"Millennium Ancestor's emergence after 6 million years has provoked an unseemly outbreak of name-calling, litigation and academic feuding between some of the world's finest anthropological minds."
Here is how Millennium Ancestor (not exactly catchy, is it?) fits in:

Millennium Ancestor

15/2/01 - Number two in my occasional series 'Places I Have Stayed', Grisedale in North Yorkshire:

Grisedale, North Yorkshire

I stayed there as part of my Geography A-level back in 1987 and 1988.  Grisedale is known as 'The Dale That Died'.

15/2/01 - A nice guide to the bars of Tallahassee.  Yay, Fatty and Skinny's:

"Right by all those other crappy places, but with a better atmosphere, although morons still drift in from Tennessee Street."
One of the crappy places, Bullwinkles:
"Good christ. Frat boys and girls from FSU frequent Bullwinkle's, so be prepared for lots of Tommy Hillfinger clones and their hottie but whoribly (tm JRae) stupid girlfriends. What's worse, be prepared for the Tommy's and the hotties that are looking to "hook-up.""
15/2/01 - Don't you just hate it when someone gets an article to their weblog first?

This describes the parody 'Tintin in Thailand' but it's all in French.  Some pictures but none of Tintin or Snowy in flagrante delicto.

14/2/01 - The Top Ten (U.S.) Conservative idiots: (via clearsphere)

"Some new friends, some old faces this week as the conservative scandal-machine chugs slowly back to life. Arlen Specter rockets to the top spot with his outrageous call for Impeachment II. Dan Burton steals the second spot with his stellar performance as "the least credible man to be throwing stones at Bill Clinton." and Dan Quayle (4) makes his long-awaited debut on the chart. GWB is hanging in there at number six, while Ollie North (8) once again misses the whole point of Iran-Contra. And in a burst of generosity, we decide to give Rush Limbaugh (10) a much-needed injection of publicity after learning of his show's falling ratings. We're all rooting for ya, Rush!"
14/2/01 - The Popstars application form.

14/2/01 - George W. Bush's military records. (via email)

14/2/01 - Vegetarianism has increased from 1% to 2.5% of the U.S. population since 1997. (via Tangents)

And if you're a vegetarian of the globetrotting kind then this page would be useful: (via Footprints)

"Arabic
Ana Nabatee (I am vegetarian [male]
Ana Nabateeya (I am vegetarian) [female]
Mish Akool Lahma walla Ferekh khalis (I don't eat meat or chicken at all)

Armenian
              (yes) busa'ker=banjara'ker em. (I'm a vegetarian)..."

14/2/01 - If you want to access the Turner Classic Movies website, for any reason, you have to have Flash 5.  That is really annoying.

13/2/01 - Over a year ago I had a link to an article about scientists sneaking up on moose and throwing snowballs at them.  Honeyguide has a follow-up article with photo:

Those moose are easily fooled

13/2/01 - A new interview with John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats.  They have a new 12", Isopanisad Radio Hour.

13/2/01  - A weblog dedicated to how awful Bob the Builder is.  Based in California?!

13/2/01 - Wow, those are big crystals: (via Bifurcated Rivets)

Earth's largest natural crystals

13/2/01 - Yay! Dog lovers are beating cat lovers by two to one in this CNN poll.

13/2/01 - A new weblog search engine, Blogfinder.

13/2/01 - I don't think this fashion will catch on:

Jean-Paul Gaultier 'fashion'

13/2/01 - The New Yorker now has content online.
