The View From Here

29/2/00 - Interesting Q and A on living in Japan.  And a good list of links for Japanese Pop.

29/2/00 - All the dirt on the U.S. Presidential candidates.  (via Remco B. Brink)

29/2/00 - A few new, well new to me, weblogs based in Britain: jamespo's, The Nutlog and w4t.

I can empathise with James, undoubtedly he has been asked many times where's his magic torch.  [Warning: sound]

A nice Jamie and the Magic Torch page.

29/2/00 - Pretentious moi?

"I think it bodes well for world peace that Friends is a success everywhere in the world."  Lisa Kudrow, Heat
A complete rip from Luvvies of course.

29/2/00 - Happy Sadie Hawkins Day!  Or, from this article on how to pop the question, Happy Leap Year's Day?!

More information on leap years.

28/2/00 - A collection of the dumbest, unfunniest picture captions ever.  And what a great source picture. [Article will probably disappear overnight.]

"Sofia, so good
Not now, Monica!
Sophia, not in front of Hillary, please!
Spanish fly!
Ohmigosh, is THAT what the fuss is all about?
So that's what Monica and Paula were talking about!"
28/2/00 - There was an interview today on 'The Diane Rhem Show' with Sarah Hrdy, author of 'Mother Nature: A History of Mothers, Infants, and Natural Selection'; this is the audio.

26/2/00 - This is a nice feature to complement the weblog map, a list of all non-US weblogs.  It leads me to a weblog based in Taiwan, but it suffers from what Bifurcated Rivets refers to as TinyText®.

26/2/00 - An interview with Colin Blakemore is interesting but what exactly has this bit got to do with the story:

"Since the professor's comely wife Andrée is a magistrate in Oxford, the trial of O'Neill was held in Wantage..."
Comely?!  I mean why not buxom?  No mention of the professor either, is he buff?

26/2/00 - You could knock me down with a feather, it seems supermodels are spoilt and stupid.

26/2/00 - Yorkshire is full of plain, honest folk:

"Slagged off: Developers of a prestigious housing estate on former colliery land in Tankersley, South Yorkshire, have been told by the parish council that they cannot use names such as Mulberry Grove and Willow Court because they are too pretentious."
26/2/00 - I'm informed that the Simpsons episode mentioned below is based on a short story in a collection called 'Don Camillo's Dilemma' by Giovanni Guareschi.  Unfortunately the appropriate story 'A Soul For Sale' is not transcribed onto the web but there is a brief summary:
"A Soul for Sale -- Communist Neri sells to old capitalist Molotti the soul he doesn't believe he has ... a good deal?"
You can buy the book online as there are  around 40 copies available through Abebooks (starting at £1.75!)

There is a very complete site on Don Camillo and even a webring

25/2/00 - Funny Rock Death Index.

The best bits are the footnotes explaining the scoring:

"Bonham: 1 FC point deducted for being the father of Jason Bonham
...
Palmer: 2 M points deducted for not being the right Robert Palmer to die"
25/2/00 - The latest global warming research.

25/2/00 - Let's hope her acting is better than her memoir:

"Claire Bloom will portray seven of Shakespeare's most intriguing female characters in tonight's one-woman show."
25/2/00 - Life copies The Simpsons, man tries to sell soul on eBay:  (via Remco B. Brink)
"eBay does not allow the auctioning of human souls for the following reasons: If the soul does not exist, eBay could not allow the auctioning of the soul because there would be nothing to sell. However, if the soul does exist then, in accordance with eBay's policy on human parts and remains, we would not allow the auctioning of human souls."
25/2/00 - I suppose it makes as much sense as stars, rate your movie with pigs.

25/2/00 - A headline, re Santana, that conjures up frightening images:

'Music is the water and I'm a hose'
24/2/00 - A line-up to make you weep, All Tomorrow's Parties:
"Sonic Youth headline Stage One on Saturday with support from Arab Strap, Clinic, Snow Patrol, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead and Ligament.  Stage Two will feature Shellac, The For Carnation, Pan American, Ganger and Motor Life Co.  Mogwai will headline the final day on Stage One with support from Wire, Papa M, Sigur Ros, Bardo Pond and Two Dollar Guitar."
24/2/00 - For the benefit of friends.  The weblog with Sloan, Yuppie Slayer.  The weblog with great Japanese stuff, Mr. Pants.  The weblog with V89-type music links, western homes.

24/2/00 - Pitchfork gets Gavin Rossdale's protest just right:

"In a recent Austrian concert, Bush sang a Jewish hymn in form of a protest, even though Gavin Rossdale possibly believes Oesterreich to be a large, flightless bird. He continued to protest by taking off his shirt and scowling."
24/2/00 - This never happens on Jeopardy:
"TV STAR Carol Vorderman kept the show going when she picked out the letters AR-S-E on Countdown."
24/2/00 - That Scottish culinary delight, the deep fried Mars bar, crosses into France:
"A Scottish chef has sparked a national debate in France after outraging food purists by putting deep-fried chocolate bars on the menu."
It does look delicious:

Deep fried Mars bar

24/2/00 - I saw a great picture recently (via another weblog) of that annoying paperclip in Word and a suicide note.  If anyone has the url please send it to me.  (Ctrl-D would have saved me from this request.)

24/2/00 - After months (years!) of waiting V89 is finally available in streaming audio!  And for the benefit of future search engines, WVFS Tallahassee, the Voice of Florida State.

They have it running as it is our Pledge Drive.  One week every four years, which is pretty good compared to some public stations.  If you feel like contributing to our little station just call (850) 644-3871, there are some nice T-shirts and stuff available.
