The View From Here

7/11/00 - Gratuitous pig link, which includes a photo of the infamous flying pig.

7/11/00 - An interview with Bill Kelly, founder of the Orton Society.

7/11/00 - Controversy over the choice of the Royal Institution lecturer, NTK's favourite Kevin Warwick:

"Academics are furious that Prof Kevin Warwick, described last week as a "buffoon", a "joke" and a "media tart", has been granted an honour that has carried much prestige since Michael Faraday, the physicist and chemist, delivered the first Christmas lectures in 1826."
7/11/00 - My local, the New Barrack Tavern, has its own webpage.  And gets reviewed on the 'When Saturday Comes' site as well.

7/11/00 - An interview with Nicolson Baker who is saving newspapers being disposed of by the British Library.  I mentioned a similar story last month.

7/11/00 - Buy all your Sheffield products online.

7/11/00 - This had to be weblogged, just for the silly headline.  Pith and Vinegar did it for the same reason:

"The London Express has dubbed the current proliferation of British hedgehogs (and related decline in numbers of rare birds) the "Tiggywinkle Terror". Okay, okay.. I just posted this as a sad excuse to say (hee hee!) "Tiggywinkle Terror" as much as possible."
2/11/00 - More weirdoes;

People who want to repeal the 19th amendment to the U.S. constitution.  (That's the one that gave women the vote).

People who want to repeal the 14th amendment.  (That's the one that freed the slaves.)

2/11/00 - You may remember the NatWest piggies but did you ever see Cousin Wesley?

Cousin Wesley

One went for $230 on Ebay.

2/11/00 - I know the web is renowned for all manner of freaks and weirdoes but this is just really bizarre. [warning: contains hot girl/balloon action]

2/11/00 - Songs 'banned' by the BBC at various times.

2/11/00 - Amongst many other things it seems our MPs are crap at web design.

From the actual report:

"Patricia Hewitt, the government minister for e-business, has an important message for her internet savvy constituents. According to her web page "The best way to conact [sic] me is to write to the Leicester office." She does supply an email address, but the generous minister makes it clear that her preferred means of communication is via good old-fashioned pen and paper. What's more, she "aim[s] to respond within 7 working days.(1)" To misquote Microsoft, this is business at the speed of politics."
2/11/00 - Carry out the polymerase chain reaction in your kitchen.

29/10/00 - If it wasn't for those pesky kids:

"A mother-of-four who was born and raised in Keighley has been jailed for 12 years by an American court after a failed hijack to free her husband from Death Row. Josie Clark, 54, is starting her jail term after a brazen escape bid during which she hired a helicopter before threatening the pilot at gunpoint and ordering him to fly to the prison in Florida where her 30-year-old, double-murderer husband Ronald is being held."
29/10/00 - The Guardian section on 'Are we dumbing down?' is being weblogged a lot.  I was sent the quiz via gorjuss. [I got 37 out of 38.]

As part of the piece they have exam papers from 1951, 1977 and 2000.  The History paper from 1951 is fascinating, did people have to learn this stuff?!

29/10/00 - Homophone watch, from yesterday's Guardian:

"Dutch raids bare Bond-like cache"
(The Guardian website seems to have technical problems.)

29/10/00 - Nice little art tours.  All very conservative.

Unlike Balthus.  Not an artist I had any knowledge of until a few weeks ago.  But I was pointed to him by methylsalicylate.  His most famous painting is 'The Guitar Lesson'. [warning: nudity]
